4 reasons boating accidents occur

If you are planning your dream vacation, Myrtle Beach is an excellent destination. After all, eastern South Carolina has miles of ocean and lake to explore. Spending a few hours on a boating excursion is a fantastic way for you to make memories that last a lifetime.

When you and your family climb onboard a boat, you want to stay safe. Unfortunately, boating accidents can cause long-term injuries or death. If you or a member of your party gets hurt, you may need to act diligently to receive compensation for your injuries. Still, by understanding boating accidents, you can better protect your family on vacation. Here are four reasons boat accidents usually occur:

1. Inexperienced operators

Maritime accidents are more common than you may think. Experienced operators know how to keep passengers safe. Therefore, you should always ask about experience before booking an excursion. You should also think about water conditions. Remember, a pilot who is competent in calm waters may not have the necessary skills to safely navigate storms.

2. Distracted sailing

To avoid an accident, sailors must pay attention to the boat, water conditions, other watercraft and the weather. Distracted sailing is a recipe for disaster. As such, look for a boating operator who focuses on boating safety.

3. Extreme speeds

Flying across the surface of the water is exhilarating. It can also be incredibly dangerous. Therefore, try to avoid boating excursions at high speeds. Instead, opt for a more leisurely adventure.

4. Drunk boating

To attract fun-seeking customers, sailing outfitters often serve alcohol onboard. Booze and safety do not mix. If the members of your party drink too much, they may make impulsive and dangerous decisions. They may also not be able to react to emergencies. Accordingly, always stay sober when you are on the water. Also, never sail with a captain who drinks onboard.

You may not be able to prevent a boating accident. You should, however, do your best to keep your family safe on vacation. By using your knowledge of boating accidents to find the right excursion, you increase your chances of avoiding a catastrophe on the water.
