South Carolina Longshore Law Attorney
The Longshore and Harbor Workers’ Compensation Act is a federal workers’ compensation act that provides worker’s compensation benefits for longshoremen, harbor workers, crane operators, bridge builders, dock workers, vessel repair yard workers, and other people who work in marinas, ports, container terminals, boatyards, ship yards. This special worker’s compensation act for maritime workers often provides greater benefits than the South Carolina Worker’s Compensation Act. For example, an injured worker under the Longshore Act is entitled to lifetime medical care and to choose the treating doctor.
The Longshore Act also has a higher compensation rate than state acts. A compensation rate is the amount of money an injured worker receives during the time period he is not able to work, or for any permanent disability. When someone is injured and cannot work, it is a trying time for them and their families. The higher compensation rate helps injured workers and their families.

The Defense Base Act applies to workers injured on military bases in the United States or throughout the world or working for federal government contractors in war torn regions such as Iraq, Afghanistan, and the Middle East. The Defense Base Act adopts the language of the Longshore Act, resulting in injured workers having the same rights as marine workers under the Longshore Act.
